Day 1

Module 1: Foundation & Market Positioning

Today's Objective

Conduct an honest audit of your current market position. Before you can build a premium video production business, you need to understand exactly where you stand today.

The Problem

Most video producers cannot articulate why a client should choose them over any other camera operator. They are interchangeable commodities, competing on price alone. This positioning audit reveals your current reality so you can transform it.

The Audit Framework

Step 1: Current Position Statement Answer these questions in writing:

  • When someone asks what you do, what do you say? Write your exact current response.
  • What types of projects make up 80% of your revenue?
  • What is your average project value over the last 12 months?
  • What percentage of your leads come from referrals vs. outbound vs. inbound?
  • If you disappeared tomorrow, would any client struggle to replace you?

Step 2: Competitive Landscape Mapping Identify 5 competitors in your market:

  • Who charges the highest rates and what do they offer?
  • Who charges the lowest rates and how do they survive?
  • What do all competitors in your market claim to be good at?
  • What gaps exist that no one is addressing?
  • Where on the price spectrum do you currently sit?

Step 3: Client Perception Check Contact 3 past clients and ask:

  • Why did you choose me over other options?
  • What specific outcome did my video create for your business?
  • How would you describe what I do to a colleague?
  • What almost made you choose someone else?

Step 4: Self-Assessment Scoring Rate yourself 1-10 on each dimension:

  • Technical skill (cinematography, editing, color)
  • Business development and sales
  • Client communication and professionalism
  • Niche specialization depth
  • Pricing confidence and rate achievement
  • Brand presentation (website, portfolio, social)

Key Insight

The gap between your highest scores and lowest scores reveals your growth path. The goal of this curriculum is not to make you average at everything. It is to make your positioning so sharp that clients self-select before they ever contact you.

Today's Deliverable

A completed Positioning Audit worksheet with honest scores, competitor notes, and client feedback. This becomes your baseline. You will revisit this audit on Day 90 to measure transformation.

Revenue Connection

Positioning clarity directly determines pricing power. Producers with fuzzy positioning average $400-600/day. Producers with surgical positioning command $1,500-2,500/day for comparable work. The difference is not skill. It is perception.
