Template Overview
This template structures every major HVAC proposal into three distinct tiers, eliminating decision paralysis while maximizing average ticket value. The psychological principle is "anchoring" — the homeowner compares all options against the premium tier, making the middle tier feel like a sensible compromise and the base tier feel like a sacrifice.
Tier Structure
#### TIER 1: GOOD — "Essential Comfort"
Positioning: Minimum code-compliant solution that restores basic heating and cooling.
Equipment: Single-stage, baseline SEER/AFUE, standard warranty.
Includes: Equipment, basic pad, standard thermostat, standard duct connections, disposal of old unit, 1-year labor warranty.
Price Presentation: "$X,XXX — gets you back to comfortable."
Psychology: This is the "anchor low." It establishes the floor. Many buyers will skip it because it feels like settling, but it captures the truly price-sensitive minority.
#### TIER 2: BETTER — "Enhanced Efficiency & Reliability"
Positioning: The choice most homeowners make. Improved efficiency, better warranty, and comfort upgrades.
Equipment: Two-stage or variable-speed, mid-tier SEER/AFUE, extended warranty.
Includes: Everything in Tier 1 PLUS: Wi-Fi smart thermostat, surge protector, compressor sound blanket, upgraded pad/stands, 5-year labor warranty, 1-year maintenance included.
Price Presentation: "$X,XXX — this is our most popular option. It pays for the efficiency difference in about 3 years."
Psychology: The "compromise effect." When presented three options, 60-70% of buyers select the middle tier. This is your target margin tier.
#### TIER 3: BEST — "Total Home Comfort System"
Positioning: The premium experience with maximum efficiency, IAQ integration, and white-glove service.
Equipment: Variable-speed or modulating, highest SEER/AFUE, lifetime unit replacement warranty on core parts.
Includes: Everything in Tier 2 PLUS: Whole-home media air cleaner, UV light, humidifier or dehumidifier (climate-dependent), zoning damper (if applicable), 10-year labor warranty, 2-year maintenance included, priority scheduling, no-dispatch-fee guarantee.
Price Presentation: "$X,XXX — this is what I put in my own home. You get the best of everything, and your utility company may offer rebates up to $XXX."
Psychology: The "aspirational anchor." It makes Tier 2 look affordable by comparison and captures the high-margin buyer who wants the best.
Presentation Script Framework
Step 1 — Set the Table (30 seconds)
"Mrs. Johnson, I've looked at your entire system, your ductwork, your insulation levels, and your family's needs. I'm going to show you three ways we can solve this. All three will make you comfortable. The difference is how efficient they are, how quiet they are, how long they last, and what extras come with them. There is no pressure to decide today — my job is to give you the information you need to make the right choice for your family."
Step 2 — Present Tier 3 First (2 minutes)
Start with the premium tier. Show the equipment, the accessories, the warranty documents, and the rebate forms. Let them touch the thermostat and see the air cleaner filter.
Step 3 — Present Tier 2 (90 seconds)
"Most of our homeowners land right here. You get the efficiency jump, the smart thermostat, and the longer warranty. Over five years, the energy savings usually offset the extra upfront cost."
Step 4 — Present Tier 1 (45 seconds)
"This is our essential option. It gets you comfortable and meets all code requirements. It's a good unit — just without the extras."
Step 5 — Silence & Ask (15 seconds)
"Which of these three feels like the best fit for how long you plan to stay in the home and what matters most to you?"
Step 6 — Handle Objection or Close
If they ask for time: "Absolutely. I'll email these three options to you in a PDF you can review with your spouse. I'll also include the utility rebate application. When should I follow up — tomorrow evening or Saturday morning?"
Pricing Math Example
| Tier | Equipment Cost | Labor & Materials | Total Cost | Markup (2.4x) | Customer Price | Gross Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Good (14 SEER) | $2,800 | $1,200 | $4,000 | 2.4x | $9,600 | 58% |
| Better (16 SEER 2-stage) | $3,600 | $1,400 | $5,000 | 2.4x | $12,000 | 58% |
| Best (18 SEER variable) | $5,200 | $1,800 | $7,000 | 2.4x | $16,800 | 58% |
Note: Adjust markup based on your overhead. If your overhead is higher, use 2.6x-2.8x.
