A profitable niche sits at the intersection of three factors: your existing skills, market demand, and willingness to pay. You need all three. A niche you love with no paying clients is a hobby. A niche with huge demand where you have no skills is a trap. A niche where you're skilled and there's demand but clients won't pay premium prices is a grind.
Start by listing every type of podcast you could potentially serve. Business podcasts, health and wellness shows, true crime, comedy, interview shows, solo shows, narrative documentaries, religious programming, sports talk, financial advice — the list is long. Now apply the Six Niche Category Lens to each:
- Industry Vertical — Serving a specific industry (e.g., real estate podcasts, fitness podcasts, legal podcasts)

- Host Type — Serving a specific category of host (e.g., coaches, authors, executives)
- Production Complexity — Positioning by technical sophistication (e.g., multi-remote recording, video podcasting)
- Business Model — Serving shows with specific monetization (e.g., B2B lead generation podcasts, membership-supported shows)
- Career Stage — Serving hosts at a specific stage (e.g., launch-only packages for new podcasters, growth optimization for established shows)
Today's Action: The Niche Evaluation Matrix
Create a spreadsheet with your top 6-10 niche candidates. Score each on a 1-5 scale across these dimensions:
- Personal interest and energy
- Existing skills and experience
- Evidence of paying clients (search job boards, Facebook groups, LinkedIn)
- Average budget level (are these businesses or hobbyists?)
- Competition intensity
- Ease of reaching decision-makers
- Growth trajectory of the niche
Total the scores. Your top 3 candidates are your shortlist. These are the niches you'll validate in the coming days.
