Module 1: Foundation & Market Positioning
The Problem
Course creators who try to serve everyone serve no one. Generic messaging fails to resonate. Broad targeting wastes ad spend. When you do not know exactly who your ideal student is, your marketing becomes forgettable and your course fails to connect. Day 3 creates a precise student avatar that will guide every decision you make.
Beyond Demographics: The Psychographic Profile
Demographics (age, location, income) describe who your student is. Psychographics describe why they buy. Your ideal student profile must include both, but psychographics drive purchase decisions.
The Five-Layer Avatar Framework
Layer 1: Identity Markers
- Age range, gender, location, occupation, income level
- Education background and self-identified skill level
- Current role or title they give themselves
Layer 2: Current Reality (The Before State)
- What does their average day look like?
- What specific frustrations do they experience related to your topic?
- What have they already tried that failed?
- What limiting beliefs do they hold about their ability to succeed?
Layer 3: Desired Reality (The After State)
- What does success look like 90 days after completing your course?
- How will their daily life change?
- What will they be able to do, have, or feel that they cannot now?
- What does this transformation enable in other areas of their life?
Layer 4: Buying Psychology
- What triggers their decision to seek solutions? (Pain point activation)
- Where do they search for answers? (Google, YouTube, social, recommendations)
- What objections will they have to buying your course?
- What proof do they need to trust you? (Credentials, testimonials, case studies)
- What price point feels like a serious investment but not impossible?
Layer 5: Communication Preferences
- What language do they use to describe their problem?
- What tone resonates? (Professional, casual, direct, empathetic)
- What content formats do they consume? (Video, podcasts, articles, live sessions)
- What platforms do they spend time on?
Avatar Research Methods
Method 1: Community Listening. Spend 30 minutes in Facebook groups, subreddits, and forums where your ideal students gather. Copy and paste exact phrases they use to describe their problems, frustrations, and desires. These phrases become your marketing copy.
Method 2: Survey Existing Audience. If you have any email list or social following, send a 5-question survey: What is your biggest challenge with [topic]? What have you tried? What would solving this enable for you?
Method 3: Interview 3-5 Potential Students. 15-minute conversations uncover insights surveys miss. Ask about their journey, frustrations, and what an ideal solution would look like.
Method 4: Review Mining. Read Amazon reviews of books in your niche, app store reviews of related tools, and testimonials for competitor courses. Extract the exact language your market uses.
The Avatar One-Pager
Consolidate your research into a single-page document you can reference when writing sales copy, creating content, or designing ads. Include:
- Avatar name (e.g., "Struggling Sarah" or "Ambitious Alex")
- One-paragraph narrative describing their current situation and desired outcome
- Top 3 pain points in their exact language
- Top 3 desired outcomes in their exact language
- Primary objection to purchasing
- Key proof element needed to trust
- Preferred communication channel and content format
