Day 5

Module 1: Market Positioning & Trade Identity

Today's Focus: Establish the trust signals that international buyers need to see before committing to a deal.

The Trust Problem in International Trade

An international buyer considering a new supplier faces a fundamental problem: they are sending money to someone they have never met, in a country with different laws, for a product they will not see until it arrives weeks later. Every buyer has a story of a shipment that never came, a quality that did not match samples, or a deposit that disappeared.

Your credibility signals exist to eliminate this fear. They answer the buyer's unspoken question: "Can I trust this trader with my money and my business reputation?"

The Credibility Pyramid

Build credibility signals across these layers:

Tier 1 — Essential (Must Have)

  • Professional website with company history and team photos
  • Active LinkedIn profile with trade-related content
  • Business registration and tax ID verification
  • Working email at company domain (not Gmail/Yahoo)
  • Physical office address (verified on Google Maps)

Tier 2 — Important (Should Have)

  • Trade references from 2-3 past buyers
  • Industry association membership ( chamber of commerce, trade body)
  • Relevant certifications (ISO, organic, fair trade, depending on product)
  • Third-party inspection partnership (SGS, Bureau Veritas, etc.)
  • Trade show booth photos or attendance records

Tier 3 — Advanced (Competitive Advantage)

  • Published articles or white papers on your product category
  • Video testimonials from international buyers
  • Case studies with specific results ("reduced delivery time by 30%")
  • LinkedIn recommendations from buyers and suppliers
  • Media mentions or industry awards

Tier 4 — Elite (Market Leader)

  • Speaking engagements at trade conferences
  • Industry advisory board positions
  • Published industry reports or market data
  • Educational content (webinars, training programs)

The 48-Hour Credibility Blitz

If your credibility is weak, execute this blitz:

  • Hour 1-4: Create or update LinkedIn profile. Add banner, professional photo, detailed summary
  • Hour 5-8: Set up company email at your domain
  • Hour 9-12: Register with local chamber of commerce
  • Hour 13-24: Build or refresh your website with professional content
  • Hour 25-32: Contact 3 past buyers and request a reference letter
  • Hour 33-48: Research and join one relevant industry association

Key Insight

Credibility is cumulative. Each signal stacks on the last. A buyer who sees a professional website, active LinkedIn, chamber membership, and a third-party inspection partnership will assume you are established. A buyer who sees only a Gmail address and no online presence will assume you are a risk.

Today's Action Items

  1. Score your current credibility across all four tiers (1-5 each)
  2. Execute the 48-Hour Credibility Blitz steps you can complete today
  3. Contact two past buyers to request reference testimonials
  4. Identify the one credibility gap that is costing you the most deals

Tomorrow: Craft your value proposition statement.
