The Problem

Inconsistent brand voice confuses customers and erodes trust. If your Instagram captions are playful and casual but your product descriptions read like a legal document, customers sense a disconnect. Trust is built through predictable, recognizable brand expression.

The Concept

Your brand voice is the personality of your business. It should be so consistent that a customer could identify your brand without seeing the logo. Voice standards are not creative constraints — they are creative freedom within a framework that builds recognition.

Step 1: Choose Your Voice Dimensions (20 minutes)

Rate your brand on each spectrum (1-5):

  • Playful (1) -------- Serious (5)
  • Luxurious (1) -------- Accessible (5)
  • Trendy (1) -------- Timeless (5)
  • Bold (1) -------- Understated (5)
  • Expert (1) -------- Relatable (5)
  • Provocative (1) -------- Safe (5)

Step 2: Write Voice Rules (15 minutes)

Create 5 "Always" statements and 5 "Never" statements.

Example for a sustainable women's brand: Always:

  • Use "we" and "our" to show we are part of the community
  • Mention the fabric origin when it supports a sustainability claim
  • Write as if advising a close friend, not lecturing a stranger
  • Include a styling tip in product descriptions
  • Address fit concerns proactively

Never:

  • Use fashion industry jargon without explanation
  • Make customers feel bad about their current wardrobe
  • Overpromise ("you will look amazing") — instead, be specific
  • Ignore comments or DMs — responsiveness is part of voice
  • Copy competitor messaging — even if it works for them

Step 3: Create a Visual Identity Checklist (15 minutes)

Document your:

  • Primary and secondary colors with hex codes
  • Typography rules (fonts for headlines, body, captions)
  • Photography style (lifestyle vs. product-only, model diversity, background types)
  • Logo usage rules (minimum size, clear space, what NOT to do)
  • Instagram grid aesthetic (3-column planning, color blocking, pattern)
