From Writing Samples to Business Cases
Generalist copywriters display writing samples. Premium copywriters display business results. The difference is portfolio architecture.
A writing sample says: "Here is something I wrote. It sounds good." A business case says: "Here is a specific problem. This is what I created. This is the measurable outcome."
The Case Study Structure
Every portfolio piece should follow this four-part framework:
The Challenge: What specific business problem did the client face? Be precise. "Low conversion rate on the sales page" is weak. "Sales page converting at 0.8% when industry benchmark was 2.5%, leaving $340K in annual revenue unrealized" is strong.
The Approach: What did you create? What strategic decisions drove the work? What made your solution tailored to this specific client?
The Execution: What did you deliver? How many emails, pages, sequences? What was the timeline?
The Result: What measurable business outcome occurred? Use specific numbers whenever possible. Revenue increases, conversion rate improvements, cost per acquisition reductions.
Building Your First Three Case Studies
If you are new to copywriting, you may not have client results yet. Three pathways to build your initial portfolio:
- Spec work for dream clients: Create a sales page rewrite or email sequence for a brand you admire. Present it as a "concept project" with full disclosure.
- Pro bono for a nonprofit: Deliver real work for a cause you support. Document the process and any measurable outcomes.
- Personal project: Build and promote your own landing page, email list, or product. Your own metrics become your first case study.
Portfolio Presentation
Display case studies on a clean, fast-loading website. Each case study needs:
- Client name and industry
- Project type and timeline
- Before/after metrics
- A testimonial quote from the client
- Screenshots or samples of the work (with permission)
Today's Action
Audit your existing portfolio. Replace any generic writing samples with case studies following the four-part framework. If you lack case studies, initiate one spec or pro bono project this week.
Key Takeaway
Premium clients do not hire based on writing quality alone. They hire based on confidence that you can deliver business outcomes. Your portfolio must prove that capability.
